A joint event hosted by the Australia Geomechanics Society (AGS) and ANCOLD was held on the 1st-3rd November. This event included technical presentations relating to and a site visit of the Greenvale Dam Safety Upgrade. Presentations were delivered by Mark Arnold (Melbourne Water), Stephen Chia (AECOM) and Elliot Hannan (GHD), with Q&A support from Gavan Hunter (Hunter Geotechnical).

Topics presented provided a great insight into both the safety upgrade of the embankment to meet modern design standards, as well as geotechnical and construction challenges encountered throughout the project. Melbourne Water facilitated the site visit and ran through safety upgrade works. The site visit provided a beneficial first-hand learning experience to see Greenvale dam and allowed attendees to appreciate the scale of works required, considering the structure’s downstream significance.

This event was a valuable experience to bring together AGS and ANCOLD members and promote engaging conversation between both industry communities. Thank you to all presenters for sharing valuable learnings and to Melbourne Water for hosting a great site visit for both AGS and ANCOLD members.
