ANCOLD Young Professionals Site Visit to Wivenhoe and Somerset Dams

Author:  Tim Lawrence.

On the 26th September 2013, the Queensland division of the ANCOLD Young Professionals Group undertook a site visit of Wivenhoe and Somerset Dams. The site visit was a resounding success with everyone who attended getting a close look at some of South-East Queensland’s most important water supply and mitigation storages.

The two dams visited are very different in design and age and attendees were able to learn how they were built and designed differently, based on the expertise and construction methods available at their respective times. Operators at the dam were very helpful to the group by discussing the history of the dams as well as how they operate and interact with each other given that Somerset dam discharges into the catchment of Wivenhoe dam.

Despite the sweltering heat on the day, everyone appeared to thoroughly enjoy the event and was able to learn a great deal from the site visit! It was also a great opportunity for the attendees to meet other professionals in the dams industry and broaden their contact base.

Special thanks to Seqwater for allowing us to visit the dams, in particular David Pokarier and the dam operators at both Wivenhoe and Somerset for guiding us around the dams.
