2022 – The impact of hydraulic model resolution on potential loss of life assessments and flood extents

Dambreak hydraulic models are getting larger and more complex with the availability of increasingly high resolution LiDAR data and finer model cell size being selected to get more detailed and accurate flood extents. However, finer model cell size comes at a cost through increased run times.

The sub- grid sampling (SGS) approach from the 2020 release of TUFLOW allows modellers to utilise the high resolution of the underlying terrain data regardless of the model cell size.
This paper explores the application of the SGS feature and the impact of grid cell size on the PLL estimates and inundation maps.
