In the event of a dam failure or other emergency, everyone involved needs to be able to quickly execute their roles and responsibilities.
Emergency exercises are an important way for organisations to improve their operations and emergency- preparedness. Under the NSW Dams Safety Regulation 2019, all declared dam owners must complete an emergency exercise at least once every three years for each declared dam that they own. For extreme and high consequence category dams, a practical exercise must be completed at least every five years.
Dams Safety NSW, as the independent regulator for declared dams in NSW, provides support and guidance to declared dam owners to help them to comply with the dam safety legislation.
This paper describes a co-ordinated and collaborative approach to promoting good practice emergency exercises.
