2024 – Seismic Performance Estimation of Cardinia Dam

Stephen Chia, Ramin Raeesi, Christopher Dann

Embankment dams can experience significant amount of settlement during earthquake events and potentially lose their freeboard with increased risk of breach. Settlements in embankments can be due to liquefaction and instability, or due to deformations within the material. For cases where liquefaction is unlikely to occur, available empirical and simplified methods can be used to estimate the amount of settlement of the embankment. This paper presents a summary of performance assessment of Cardinia Dam during various earthquake events using four methods and a comparison of the results. The results indicate that due to limitations of each of the available methods, it can be recommended that various methods are considered when assessing seismic performance of embankment dams, rather than relying on just one method to ensure estimates are of higher confidence.
