This paper explores the integration of a Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) approach with traditional Standard-Based Approaches (SBA) for the design, construction, operation, and closure of mine dams. Highlighting the evolution and benefits of risk-informed decision-making, the paper delves into the unique challenges posed by the dynamic nature of mine dams, the complexities of data availability, and stringent regulatory requirements. The paper illustrates practical implications and methodologies for effective risk management through a detailed case study on a zoned earthfill embankment impacted by subsidence from underground mining. The study emphasises the necessity of rigorous engineering practices, comprehensive data collection, and proactive monitoring to mitigate risks and ensure the structural integrity of mine dams. The findings underscore the importance of adopting a QRA framework to enhance safety, comply with regulatory standards, and achieve sustainable TSF management.
