New Zealand has recently introduced Dam Safety Regulations. The Potential Impact Classifications and boundaries used in the regulations are based on NZSOLD’s 2015 Guidelines with some modifications. This paper examines those Classifications and compares them to ANCOLD, CDA, California and the superseded classifications of the NZSOLD 2000 Guidelines using a sample portfolio of 180 dams. Finally, the paper provides some conclusions on the makeup of NZ’s Potential Impact Classifications and their ability to inform the right societal risk decisions.
