This paper presents and discusses the design considerations for a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) with a Down Valley (thickened) Discharge (DVD) scheme. An option study together with the optimised design for the preferred option is presented.
The proposed DVD TSF offers an alternative storage solution to conventional TSFs with significant benefits in relation to reduced construction requirements, improved embankment stability, tailings discharge arrangement, water management, environmental impact, and closure and rehabilitation.
The design adopts a thickened tailings disposal scheme to optimise the tailings management approach and eliminate key disadvantages of the conventional TSFs. A different perspective in tailings management is presented that whilst improving storage efficiency, it can significantly reduce the risk of TSF breaches and benefit dam owners, regulators and relevant stakeholders.

ANCOLD is an incorporated voluntary association of organisations and individual professionals with an interest in dams in Australia.
System maintenance will be performed on the servers that host the ANCOLD Digital Guidelines, on Saturday, December 21st @ 10:00 PM AEDT which will require the servers to reboot.
Total downtime during that event could be up to 4 hours and will commence sharply at 10 pm AEDT. During that time end users will not be able to view or access their secured content.
