Isolation of conduits and outlets is critical for maintenance of pipes, gates, valves and outlets. On dams, implementing only single isolation of the downstream area is often inevitable. Many organisations have or are implementing a double isolation policy which results that certain tasks cannot be performed due to the safety risk. This paper explores whether this risk is perceived or real, and if cases exist where single isolation can and should be accepted.
