Two large-scale models were developed to evaluate the performance of filters and embankment materials after cracking occurs. Potential for filter material to sustain cracks was evaluated and the team considered how single-stage filters behaved comparted to broadly-graded and two-stage filters. Results of the filter modelling helps designers consider how density, gradation, and height of a filter may influence the ability to self-heal. The second model evaluated the performance of different embankment materials after cracking and helps designers consider how density, moisture content, and plasticity may influence a material’s erodibility. Reclamation’s cracked filter and embankment testing was developed after experiencing issues at Reclamation facilities.
