Climate change is forcing humanity to re-evaluate how it operates in the world and rapidly transition toward a net zero emissions world. With the global population increasing to almost 10 billion by 2050 (UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, 2017), the construction sector has a lot of work to do to find sustainable ways to facilitate this infrastructure build out. Leveraging building information models and digital twin technologies to visualise emissions in our major infrastructure projects may be a solution to drive emissions reduction pathways in the notoriously hard to abate infrastructure sector. Additionally, working together across industries to benchmark and then reduce emissions profiles of assets is another key step towards realising low carbon designs. Finally, only when stakeholders at all levels of a project are empowered to understand and engage in emissions discussions, will emissions become another metric used to evaluate the success of a project.
