2022 – Are Dam Safety Reviews Really Necessary to Confirm the Adequacy of the Design, Operation and Maintenance of a Major Dam

David Ryan – Senior Principal Civil and Dams Engineer, Stantec, Brisbane, Queensland.

Dam Safety Reviews are considered an integral part of an overall Dam Safety Management Program. Various agencies including ANCOLD provide guidance on dam safety. The ANCOLD Guidelines on Dam Safety Management (ANCOLD 2003) were specifically prepared to provide the basis for an effective program for the safe management of dams.

This paper includes discussion on some dam safety procedures, the timing and adequacy of a dam safety review, and comments that could be considered on how to better understand and manage large dams in a
safe manner.
