Shane McGrath

ANCOLD is proud to recognise Shane McGrath as an Honorary Life Member, celebrating his exceptional contributions to the dams industry and his unwavering dedication to ANCOLD’s mission. Shane’s career is a testament to his expertise and commitment to advancing dam safety, risk assessment, and governance, both in Australia and internationally.

Shane’s journey with ANCOLD began with his service as the Victorian State Representative from 2001 to 2011. He later joined the ANCOLD Executive Committee, serving from 2013 to 2021, including his term as Chair from 2018 to 2019. Over the years, Shane has authored or co-authored thirteen ANCOLD conference papers, sharing his knowledge and insights with the industry.

He has played an instrumental role in the development of ANCOLD Guidelines. Shane was a member of the Working Group for the 2003 Guidelines on Risk Assessment and served as the convenor for the 2022 update of the same guidelines. Currently, he continues to contribute as a reviewer for the update of the 2003 Guidelines on Dam Safety Management. His dedication to ANCOLD extends to conferences, risk workshops, and technical courses, including the widely recognized Dam Safety Governance Course, which he has delivered sixteen times between 2015 and 2023.

Beyond ANCOLD, Shane’s leadership and expertise have had a profound international impact. As a member of the ICOLD Committee on Dam Safety from 2010 to 2023, Shane contributed to several ICOLD Bulletins, including Bulletin 154 on Dam Safety Management, Bulletin 189 on Risk-Informed Decision Making, and Bulletin 197 on Dam Breach Flood Consequence Assessment. His participation in ICOLD has amplified Australia’s voice on the global stage and highlighted ANCOLD’s commitment to international collaboration.

Shane’s work on dam safety extends beyond policy and governance. He has been directly involved in numerous dam safety upgrade projects, pioneering risk-informed programs and ensuring that practical solutions align with industry standards. His leadership, mentorship of emerging professionals, and commitment to advancing technical knowledge have left an indelible mark on the dams industry.
